Description: Located on busy Hwy 59 in Foley, this place has a ton of fun potential and an interesting concept. We drove buy this place many times and never stopped in for several reasons. The axe throwing was not a thing we do. The curb appeal of the building and signage just wasn't inspiring for us. They only advertised Beer and Wine, which we don't drink a lot of either. They didn't say anything about German Food. They didn't open up until 4PM. (We are day explorers/drinkers so that was another challenge)
A friend of ours Christie Dee told us someone she knew recently bought the place and was doing a lot of improvements/changes and that they did have a full bar and German food. That convinced us to give it a shot.
I mentioned curb appeal. When you pull up it gives off the appearance of a bit of a hole in the wall kind of place with bad service and frozen food. They did add some banners and signage recently to let you know it was there and improve the outside appeal a little. When you go in you will be very pleasantly surprised. The inside is very clean. The axe throwing area is well thought out, looks safe and is properly sectioned off from other customers. You can still watch people throwing axes for free entertainment! I almost convinced Sheila to give it a try. Axe throwing is for 30 mins per lane with 1 person per lane. $18 for 30 Minutes. They will take reservations. 8 Lanes.
The bar like most of the rest of the place felt newer with comfortable seats and very clean.
They have a limited menu of German dishes, but what they have looked very appetizing. We were not hungry so we decided to get a pretzel. What appeared quickly was a VERY large pretzel with a spicy mustard and beer cheese for dipping. The pretzel was very hot and fresh with the right amount of salt on it.
Even though that filled us up, we had to try a brat with sauerkraut. You have a choice of sides, but Sheila is a big fan of Country/Home fries so we selected them. The brat was grilled perfectly and the kraut was very good. Sheila really liked the Country/Home fries as they were cooked with onions and peppers. (Her favorite way)
The owner was there when we were and we had a pleasant conversation with him, other regular patrons and the bartender (Owners daughter). Everyone was welcoming and joking around.
Bottom Line: We had a very good time and good munchies. The axe throwing adds another dimension that we will want to do some time. We both recommend you visit the Bier Shack Taproom.
